The Department of Electrical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) is seeking a highly qualified individual for a Research Associate position. The candidate will be expected to fulfill electromagnetics and antenna design responsibilities for current and future high-profile research contracts in the Computational Electromagnetics and Antennas Research Lab (CEARL) and to teach undergraduate courses in the department. The PSU-CEARL http://cearl.ee.psu.edu/ is world-recognized for its pioneering contributions in electromagnetics, particularly in the areas of antennas and metamaterials. The research projects will entail everything from theoretical conceptualization to simulation, fabrication and testing. The candidate may be responsible for managing a sub-group of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars in PSU-CEARL. The requirements for the position are: 1) An electrical engineering background and Ph.D. in an electromagnetics related field; 2) U.S. citizen or green card holder; 3) design experience with antennas and metamaterials; and 4) industrial experience is desired, although not required. The applicant is also expected to have all or at least a majority of the following skills: Strong practical design abilities; experience with Ansys HFSS, FEKO and CST Microwave Studio; experience with design-for-manufacturing such that only structures that are possible with current manufacturing techniques (i.e. CNC machining, injection molding, 3D printing) are pursued in early phases of electromagnetics design; hands-on experience with basic shop and electronics tools (i.e. drills, hand tools, soldering, oscilloscopes, and network analyzers); knowledge of standard mechanical (i.e. machine screws, sheet metals, and plastics) and electronic (i.e. wiring, motors, and solenoids) components and best practices is also strongly desired in order to quickly bring advanced electromagnetics design concepts to the prototype phase; printed circuit board layout and design for manufacturing; and design of basic parts and assemblies with SolidWorks. Additional supporting skills that would be desirable include: High power microwave radio frequency design; and a knowledge of waveguide hardware, pressurization, and high power practices. The responsibilities of the position include: Design and develop prototype metamaterials and antennas; supervision and management of graduate students participating in relevant sponsored research contracts; coordinate with printed circuit board fabrication companies, machine shops, and other businesses for accurate production of prototype PCBs, assemblies, and parts; final assembly and fabrication as well as field testing of prototype metamaterials and antennas; teaching undergraduate electrical engineering courses; prepare and/or publish conference proceedings, journal articles, and periodic research progress reports; prepare and deliver oral presentations at local and international conferences as well as sponsor review meetings; and participate in proposal writing and visits to potential sponsoring agencies.
