CPT Danny Zhu

A native of Princeton, NJ, Captain Danny Zhu graduated with Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY where he also received his commission into the United States Army Military Intelligence (MI) Corps. His graduate research in signal processing and electromagnetics with an emphasis on antenna theory and design, culminated with the publication of his thesis, “Source Localization within a Uniform Circular Sensor Array” in 2007, with abstracts and supporting research presented at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium, and the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Conference.

In 2015, he was selected by the United States Military Academy at West Point to pursue a PhD in Electrical Engineering, and offered a University Graduate Fellowship from the Pennsylvania State University, where he joined the Computational Electromagnetics and Antennas Research Lab (CEARL) under Dr. Douglas Werner’s supervision. His current research interests include metamaterial applications in antennas and adaptive optimization techniques.

Prior to joining the CEARL, Danny was assigned overseas in Seoul, Korea and served in a variety of leadership roles, including Executive Officer to the Commander, 501st MI Brigade and Headquarters Company Commander, 524th MI Battalion. His military service also included two years as an Army Ranger with two combat deployments to Afghanistan with the 3d Ranger Battalion and 75th Regimental Special Troops Battalion, Fort Benning, GA, and two years as an Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Maintenance Platoon Leader in the 224th MI Battalion (Aerial Exploitation), Hunter Army Airfield, GA, where he deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, Ranger Tab, Combat Action Badge and Basic Parachutist Badge. Additionally, he is a recipient of the Germany Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (Gold) and Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Knowlton Award.
